Microsoft's response to Negroponte's One Laptop per Child
Attached is a New York Times article from Davos about Microsoft's response to the One Laptop Per Child project by MIT's Negroponte. They propose using a cellphone as a computer connected to a TV and a keyboard. I don't know about the feasibility of Microsoft's proposal but the fact that they have one demonstrates the power of OLPC, open-source and market dynamics.
Brain Drain
Vi's blog reminds me of an article in NY Times last week on a World Bank study that talked about brain drain from small developing countries and how it is affecting the growth of middle class and the overall economic development of the countries themselves. The effect is much more pronounced in the small countries in Africa, Carribean and Central America; the large developing nations such as India, China, Brazil, Indonesia have only about 5% brain drain which is not as damaging.
A New Measure of Well Being
As we all get busy making the world a better and happier place, here is an interesting article from yesterday's New York Times (I am just catching up on yesterday's news) on what constitutes a sense of well-being and why the standard economic indicators may not really be indicative:
