2 suggestions for improving group subscriptions and contact

By Laura Cuozzo - Posted on 12 October 2005

Hi,

1) I'd like to suggest a dropdown or another way to "pick" from the list of user names when adding subscribers to groups. I thought I had added Tracy Prentiss to my group this weekend, but I must have entered her username incorrectly because she wasn't added. It would help reduce error if I could pick a name rather than guess or try to remember someone's user name.

2) Could we include everyone's RDVP / Stanford email on their profile? It would be helfpul rather than have to go back and open up the .XLS sheet that was distributed.

Thank you!

Upon your request, I have:

1. Enabled a new field called "program e-mail" in the personal profile, under the contact info tab where fellows can indicate the e-mail address to which they would prefer to be sent e-mail. This information is only visible to Digital Vision Fellows and the program staff and no one else.

2. Improved the Functionality for Groups Subscription and Management. Click here for detailed information.

Once again, thanks for your sugestions and valuable feedback and relevant requests...

HI Carlos,

Thanks for taking a look at this. And thank you for adding email addresses to the web site. That's a big help.

I think I might have been unlcear about my first suggestion. The problem I have when adding users to groups is that you have to enter their username perfectly for them to be added and you don't necessarily know everyone's user name. And if you enter the name incorrectly, the site just tells you it doesn't recongize the name; it t doesn't suggest any close matches. So adding subscribers can be difficult to do. (You try entering Erik's last name without having to go and look it up!) My thought was to add a dropdown list so you can select from the registered users to be added, but I don't know if that's feasible on this site.

Thanks, Laura

It's doable and definitely a must.

However it takes some programming work and time -- probably a couple of hours, including testing and double checking in different situations (dv fellow, group administrator, etc.) to make sure we comply with permissions, etc.

I'm trying to address all the requests, but with the growing list of things to add/change to the environment, I'm prioritizing providing quick solutions to the needs so we can get additional feedback while queueing additional stuff and more complex work for later.

I'm hoping the Usability group can help prioritize requests and issues to be addressed in order to help me allocate the time and effort the require.

By adding the group information block on the right side bar, which includes the option for users to suscribe themselves to groups, we simplify the process until we can meet your specific request.

For example, in the case of suscribing others to your group, just invite them to visit your group page and then to click on the "suscribe to this group" link on the right hand sidebar.

In any case, as explained above, I will work in the following days on getting a dropdwonlist of users for group managers who want to invite users individually.

Once again, thanks for your feed back and valuable sugestions.
