What is the difference between Public and Private posts?

By Carlos Miranda Levy - Posted on 12 October 2005

Any information you add to the system can be public or private.

  • Public means visible to everyone: visitors, registered user, fellows, search engines, etc.

  • Private means the information posted is only visible to members of the “audience” (group) selected.

Please note that if no “audience” (group) is selected, the information is made public, even if public is not selected. Also note that private information is visible to site administrators too.

Why would a post not be public?

  • Unfinished text or draft: post it to your own private group and make it public when ready.

  • Sensitive information included: post it to your own private group and give access to it to those you want.

What if a post is not personal or I don’t want in my blog or moved to the front page?

Post it in the forums or as a story (this option is available under compose/advanced content).

Remember, however…

  • blog and forum posts are informal by nature, no one expects academic dissertations in a blog.
  • Your 15 minutes of fame in the front page are ended quickly by another fellow’s more recent blog post.
