Overview

The 2005 Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW) National Conference will be held on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin October 5-9, 2005. Hundreds of speakers will present talks, sessions, and workshops on issues of sustainability in relation to the four conference tracks of engineering, business, technology, and education. Confirmed keynote speakers include Hunter Lovins (President of Natural Capitalism, Inc. and Time Magazine's 2000 "Hero of the Planet"), Sergio Palleroni (2005 Smithsonian Institution Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award Recipient and author of Studio at Large), and Walter Weber, Jr. ("Father of Activated Carbon for Water and Wastewater Treatment" and Chemical Engineering Professor at the University of Michigan).

Sustainability As Security

The theme for the 2005 conference, "Sustainability as Security: Engaging Education, Business, and Technology", reflects the growing concern for global food, air, water, agricultural, land, and energy security. The conference aims to move beyond a simplistic political or military connotation to promote the idea that global environmental security is something that affects all people, regardless of borders, culture, or nationality.

Engaging Education, Business, and Technology

The future depends on our ability to sustain the environment in which we live, requiring engineers to think creatively, communicate effectively, and cooperate with local and global partners in education, business, and technology. Whether they come from private, government, nonprofit organizations or academia, engineers and their collaborators hold the key to a more secure world.
