Personal Info

Name
Erik Sundelof
Personal Profile
  • PhD Licentiate in numerical analysis (PhD degree to come soon)
  • Master of Science in Chemical Technology
  • core developer AroundMe/Beacon, www.barnraiser.org
  • Fellow, RDVP, Stanford, 2005-2006
Extended Profile

I come from an academic background in advanced chemical technology, programming and numerical analysis. I have a PhD licentiate in Technology, Numerical analysis, and a Master in Science, Chemical Technology at the Royale Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. Part from that I am a core developer of the social networking software AroundMe.

At present, I am in the final stages of my doctorial dissertation, a research project, which has been focused on the simulation of reduction of surface oxides in sintered steels. I have been financed primarily by external funds and a very important part of my work is to coordinate the research efforts at the divisions of Research and Development at Höganös AB, Royal Institute of Technology and two competence centres involved in the project. (The Brinell Centre of Inorganic Interfacial Engineering, Parallel and Scientific Computing Institute). The ability to handle personal contacts and discussing with colleagues with diverse backgrounds and competences are needed daily, as I have to be prepared to present a certain problem in completely different ways to different persons.

As a person I am easy to work with and know my limitations. I rather call the person with the right expertise to get the first hand information, than have to rely on information passed through a chain of persons. Simplicity and effectiveness in what I do are strong personal values to me. This is based on the collected wisdom of almost five years of PhD studies with an industrial partner.

I love to take on new challenges and seeking solutions to both old and new problems. You will find all necessary information regarding my background in my appended CV. My background can be summarized as: modelling/simulation of physical and chemical processes, programming (especially Matlab, C++/Java and PHP/MySQL).

I am very eager to learn, smart and experienced with a lot of energy and consider myself to have very good and broad foundation to address the challenges I am faced with. The challenge to create an industrial, practicable, technical solution from laboratory scale is something that is very appealing.

An important part of any work is to relax and pause from the same to keep a clear mind. A deep love for music, beer nights with my friends and fishing are things that I find great pleasure in. When I feel like I am stuck, the cure is usually to find a piano and play for an hour, or during the spring and summer, I enjoy driving to the coastline to relax with some fishing in order to get a breath of fresh air! I always come out ready for yet another round.

Quoting the MIT saying: "You have work, sleep and friends. Pick two out of three.", I see no problem in choosing all three.

From September 2005-June 2006 I will be a Digital Vision Fellow at Stanford University, San Fransisco, California. There I will do work for the Reuters Foundation and an opensource project, which is described at http://www.campware.org.

Project Title
Campware
Project Summary

Developing a platform for open source solutions for independent news media organizations in emerging democracies I love facing new challenges! Campware is an initiative of the Media Development Loan Fund, Inc., a New York-registered public charity organization. I will contribute by developing an open source platform, for independent news media organizations. The idea is to create an online newsroom, which can be used by journalists and other communicators in emerging democracies.
