Craig's List - The Movie!!

By tzmrhal - Posted on 19 October 2005

By the way - I managed to catch the Craig's List movie just before jumping on a red-eye for the east and I'm quite happy I did.

First of all - the Red Vic Movie House - http://www.redvicmoviehouse.com/ is the perfect venue for this kind of community oriented movie - it is small approximately 100 seat theatre, with many of those 100 seats being love seat or sofa style.  Popcorn comes in returnable wooden bowls and drinks in plastic washable cups.

I went with a friend of mine from Seattle who who is working with an HCI/User Experience Designer from Palo Alto (yes, I got her card Laura!) from the Netherlands and we picked up another woman none of us had met on the way from a[nother] single bay area females listsev (easy Erik!) the dutch woman was on.  It was the perfect setup for a movie like this.  I walked out asking how many craigslist movie dates were organized via craiglist?!?

Anyway, the first hour of the movie proved to be raucous and hilarious; the second hour a thoughtful probing of anonymity and trust in our [new] online 'virtual' commmunities.

The highlight was the silence in the theatre immediately following the intereview with a handgliding intstructor set against his terrain about a post he and his wife made several years back regarding selling all their worldly possessions to go travel the world.  Subsequently, they were in Greece and met a woman painting a castle, american also.  They struck up a conversation and she soon revealed she has been inspired to travel after seeing a posting by a couple...yes selling all their worldly possessions to travel...
