Benefits of Providing Equal Access to Global and Local Content

By Carlos Miranda Levy - Posted on 24 July 2007

There is a unique opportunity to improve people's awareness of their own culture, strengthening their identity and valuation of themselves and their communities in a non-discriminating way. Through equal access to both local and global content and culture in different places and enabling communication and interaction among such experiences, people's identity could be built at the same time as their appreciation and acceptance of other cultures and values, thus promoting a true global culture of tolerance enhanced and enriched by local values and elements.

Economies of scale and global trends have a growing influence on local preferences in today's interconnected world. Local culture, content and content creators are threatened and often relegated by their limited commercialization opportunities, lack of global appeal to mass markets and losing ground to global consumption patterns in the local markets. This creates real challenges for their survival that can not be addressed by traditional market forces alone.

By improving equal access to local and global content we promote a higher appreciation of local culture and increase its appeal to the market and facilitate its evolution alongside with global trends.

If in addition, we enable and empower people with skills, tools, motivation and local spaces with global appeal to become active content creators who contribute with their own information and creations to global culture, we could successfully overcome the challenge of turning them into second class citizens of the Information Society and passive information consumers with unidirectional access to content.
