Personal Features

By Carlos Miranda Levy - Posted on 03 August 2005

Our collaboration framework is a collection of tools and an environment for social entrepreneurs and people working in Human Development. The value of our space and web site depends on the participation of each and everyone of us. We can only get something out of fellownies if we all put something into it. So special care has been given to allow users to become active participants and contributors of our community.

Every registered user sees a personal menu with access to a set of personal tools and services.

blog (web logs)

Blogs are nothing but journals composed by periodical posts that allows the user to let others know about his activities, ideas, progress, difficulties, etc. Blogs have become increasingly popular because of their casual nature that allows users to post comments and ideas without having to worry much about syntax or format. Just post your ideas, experiences, challenges, desires, rewards, achievements, frustrations, etc. every day or every couple of days in your blog so people can keep track of what you are doing. A blog is also a very effective way to let others learn more about your project and get visibility (blogs get indexed very quickly by search engines).

Fellownies allows visitors to see the latest blog postings from all users or the personal blog of a particular user through his/her profile.

my account (extended personal profile)

At registration time, you can indicate your country of origin and country of residence, as well as a short bio and a list of your interests. You can also choose from several different looks (skins) for the site and decide if you would like to let visitors contact you via private messages (on your fellownies inbox) or via e-mail (through a form that does not reveal your e-mail), both or neither.

A small picture can be added to your profile. Size limit is 100x100 to avoid layout problems. Automatic adjusting of the picture size is done if necessary.

These preferences can be updated at any time by each user just by going to your profile and clicking on the Edit tab.

Under your personal account you can also keep track of your posts and the pages you have visited within fellownies.

my private messages

Every registered user has a personal inbox where visitors leave messages in addition to the traditional option of sending an e-mail. When a user logs in to fellownies.org a "view inbox" option is listed on the menu with the number of new/unread messages. The inbox link opens the private message tool, where the user can see all messages sent and received through the system.

The private messages box and functionality can be disabled by each user in his personal profile options.

* This functionality has been disabled by request in this collaboration framework.

my workspace

Every registered users sees a "my workspace" option in the menu which gives him/her quick and centralized access to all the posts and resources he/she has added to our on-line plattform.

my contacts

This is a simple contact directory that allows users to store information of other people so they can quickly access it from any place through fellownies. The contact directory is a personal list of contacts and one user's contacts are not accessible to other users.

my buddy list

Allows you to add other users to a personal list so you can keep track of what they're doing in fellownies (see their recent posts) and easily contact them.

* This functionality has been disabled by request in this collaboration framework.

my bookmarks

As our collaboration framework grows in content, structure and depth, we are committed to guarantee access to each main area in three clicks or less. But users may want to have quick access to particular articles, sub-sections or areas of our plattform. By creating bookmarks for your favorite pages or those you may want to go back to, you can have quick access to them from any computer you log with to fellownies.org with just one click.

There is a block on the lower side of the left menu that allows generating quick bookmarks from any page within our plattform, but users may also add external links to other sites and web pages.

* This functionality has to be enabled manually by each user on the "my profile" configuration.
