Why business models are critical to innovation in emerging economies – From social entrepreneurship to businesses
Why business models are critical to innovation in emerging economies – From social entrepreneurship to building an idea or a business – Part 1
Emerging economies represent new challenges for ideas and businesses, which is why new social entrepreneurship opportunities are now the Petri-dish for what is emerging. Some examples exist of great reference;
Mentorship - I am availble as a mentor to DV Fellows
Hi:
Based on my experience at the DV Fellow 05 program and being a mentor to Jose Arocha and team http://fellows.rdvp.org/josearocha I volunteer if necessary and will be available in the form of;
How new business models will drive innovation!
From a recent Fortune magazine that I read that most companies in S&P have been rated as risky. This represents a huge challenge for companies as new emerging economies such as India, China or other countries mean new business models which have to be sustainable and scalable and I do not think that there are in most text books or case studies of today.

Is a for-profit social venture impossible?
I am collaborating with the Graduate School of Business here at Stanford, and usual working with students is always an intriguing and fruitful experience, which I usually cherish a lot. We did touch a quite interesting matter of what a social venture really is during a discussion on the project. Do all social ventures include a non-profit approach or can you have social ventures based on a ‘purely’ for-profit model? Can a commercialised approach ever do any good?

Mock Pitch
Karen has been putting together a great mock pitch event. Steve Ketchpel will be both helping organize the event and be a panelist. From Karen:
You will each be given from 10-15 minutes to present your projects to a panel of 2-3 venture capitalists or foundations (you specified your preference, we will try and accommodate that). This panel will then give you constructive criticism of your pitch. The objective is to strengthen your pitch to improve the likelihood of success with a "real" funder.
Atif, Avni, David, Deepti, Erik, Maranga, Sam, Shachi, Saori, Uuve and Michael all expressed an interest in participating. We will do three simultaneous panels to accommodate all of you.
Others are invited to watch...alumni will be invited to observe as well and to benefit from the experience. Please note: we will need a full two hours, so we are starting at 3:00pm

Alertnet: Hundreds feared dead in Philippine mudslide
First of all, I'd like to thank everyone who had expressed concern on whether I have friends/family affected in the disaster area. Thankfully, there are none. I live on the southern part of Mindanao island in the Philippines and Leyte island is located somewhere in the middle. (map image below)

Microsoft - Interest in a Microsoft mentor?
Greetings All!
Would anyone benefit from having an informal mentor from Microsoft?
Microsoft employees have been mentors in the past and are willing to do so again in the future. Because we are half way into the Program, this would be an informal mentorship...imagine it would be for someone who has a specific technical/business need that would lend itself well to Microsoft support. This would be non-financial support....intellectual/technical...

The Perils of Intermediation
Unless research groups remain in continuous contact, interaction and exchange communication with the rest of the stakeholders, their separation from the actual development and deployment process generates a dangerous discontinuity and an unnecessary gap between observation, design, deployment and redesign.
The Need for a Special Approach in the Development of ICT Projects
The Different Nature of ICT Projects
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) projects are different from common manufactured or consumer products in that they are not built through an expensive production line that requires physical resources difficult to change and modify.

SIFT: Social Impact from Technology
Methodology for the formulation and deployment of Information Technology Strategies that generate an impact on Human Development and close the gap between stakeholders (beneficiaries), developers and management. Built on the lessons learned through 9 years of developing IT strategies, projects, social networks and virtual environments, from best practices to unexpected complications.
CODE3: Collaborative Project Development through Continuous Community Direct Engagement.
Why do some collaborations work and others fall apart? Collaborations are the activities of cohesive communities working toward common goals. Yet, so often, a host of issues, cultural, technical, style of communication, thwart the best intended, well resourced efforts. Carlos Miranda Levy, drawing on 10 years of experience building, working with and in community will highlight some of the essential elements of what works, what doesn't and why. He will use examples from the open source movement such as PHPNuke, PostNuke, Drupal, Civicspace and the Digital Vision Collaboration Framework at Stanford to illustrate his case.
Social Impact from Technology
The Illusion and Negative Effect of Social Impact from Information and Communication Technologies
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are wonderful tools with an enormous potential for Social Impact, Human Development and improving the lives of the people they serve.
Fixing inaccuracies in event times and time zones
I took some time to investigate the inaccuracies many of you have found and pointed out in the display of times for events.
I discovered that the discrepancies were caused both by the use of different time zones by the users and the system and the recent time saving change in the US.
Audio Upload and Playback Feature
Note: This note is old, I just updated it with some additional information and clearer instructions.
Users can now upload podcasts or audio files to the collaboration framework that visitors can listen to on-line or download for offline listening in their computers, Ipods or mp3 players.
e-Commerce Sandbox for fellows
Several of our projects aim to become sustainable by offering some sort of service or product on-line and charging for it.
I thought it would be a good idea to enable a couple of e-commerce applications, on-line stores and shopping carts for the fellows to play around with them and explore their configuration and how they could be used easily for their projects.

How do you change a Picture?
Dear All,
Does anyone know how to change their own picture on the PUBLIC RDVP website? I know how to change it on Fellownies, but need to know on RDVP. I actually do not want a happy face picture of me out there when my last few blogs have been about death and destruction in Pakistan.
